Cuddly Chooks

Cuddly chooks is the title for this post. It's something that's been rolling around in my head for about a year. Cuddly chooks is my made up term for chickens who seem to enjoy human company. Not just approaching them for treats but willing to spend time calmly perched on their owners without having to be restrained. To some they live unnoticed or are nuisance under their feet. Some people seek them out and thoroughly enjoy their company. I stumbled across my 'cuddly chook' at a local sale. Her name is Hattie (in keeping with the old fashioned ladies names). She was personality tested at the sale. She was quiet and calm and refused to get off my arm when she was placed back in the cage with her pen mates. A pure bred Pekin not to standard but that is ok. Her work is more in the public relations department than the supermodel, manufacturing or management sectors of the chicken world. Hattie gives a chance for kids and non chicken lovers to see, hold and interact with a relaxed happy hen. Her presence will hopefully create another generation of backyard chicken keepers. Chickens are more than meat and eggs, they are a lovely companion too. As for me the sight of her on my lap, with neck stretched out and eyes closed enjoying her feathers being stroked creates that warm fuzzy feeling and allows a piece of a stressful day to melt away. 1. I have several little cuddly chooks in my flock and I adore them. They will readily allow me to pick them up and carry them around, chattering away all the while and enjoying a scritch under the chin or at the back of the neck. They are so sweet!
